Spanish I A is a comprehensive, course for grades 9-12 designed to help students comprehend and communicate the Spanish language as well as gain a better awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures by focusing on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading, and writing of the Spanish language. The course is divided into weekly units of four lessons designed to examine a variety of topics and teach basic conversational skills applicable in the classroom and daily use. Lessons 1-3 of all units consist of a daily lesson and a practice and mastery test for student learning. Lesson 4 of each unit contains a review of material learned in that unit, an interactive game, and the unit test. Spanish I A includes topics such as common greetings and cognates, school and classes, time, days, months, seasons, and weather, appearance, personality, and feelings, daily activities and sports, asking questions and giving positive and negative responses, food and drinks, going to the supermarket, and going to a restaurant.

The content and concepts in this course are, in part, based on the National Standards in Foreign Language Education developed in cooperation with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

• Spanish I A is presented as a semester-long high school course.

• All lessons contain a study guide, practice activities, and a mastery test.

• The Spanish I A course is divided into weekly units with four lessons in each unit. Lessons 1-3 of all units consist of a daily lesson and a practice and mastery test for student learning. Lesson 4 of each unit contains a review of material learned in that unit, an interactive game, and the unit test.

• Interactive games (Juegos) include crossword puzzles, word searches, and more. Juegos are found in lesson 4 of each unit.

Spanish lessons are enriched with activities that provide interactive media for students.

 


• The content and concepts in this course are, in part, based on the National Standards in Foreign Language Education developed in cooperation with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

• Spanish I A focuses on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading, and writing of the Spanish language. Lessons examine a variety of topics and teach basic conversational skills applicable in the classroom and daily use.

• Students are encouraged to grow beyond drill and practice into meaningful interaction with the Spanish language. Students will review and practice the speaking and spelling of Spanish words and develop a basic understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.

 


• Spanish I A requires students to have Adobe Acrobat® Reader® available on their workstations to complete two of the word search puzzles (Juegos) linked to the lessons. Available at: www.adobe.com, select the Get Adobe Reader button.

• Due to the interactive nature of this course, there are a few specific software requirements:

  • The following web browsers are recommended:
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer® versions 6.0 or higher
    • Safari® versions 2.0 or higher
  • Interactive activities require a web browser equipped with the Adobe® Flash® and Shockwave plug-ins. Available at: www.adobe.com (select Get ADOBE FLASH PLAYER and Get Shockwave Player).

  • Java 1.41 or higher (normally installed with your A+LS client).

Spanish I B is designed to help students comprehend and communicate the Spanish language as well as have a better understanding of Spanish cultures. Lessons cover a variety of topics and build on the conversation and grammatical skills introduced in Spanish I A, allowing students to become more proficient in their knowledge of the Spanish language. Spanish I B builds on the conversational skills introduced in Spanish I A. This course is divided into weekly units with four lessons in each unit. Lessons 1-3 of all units consist of a daily lesson and a practice and mastery test. Lesson 4 of each unit contains a review of material learned in that unit, an interactive game, and the unit test. Spanish I B includes topics such as use of reflexive verbs and pronouns, families and kinship, household objects and chores, medical words and phrases, cardinal directions, travel terms and locations, personality descriptors, games and activities, and technology.

Lessons cover a variety of topics and build on the conversational and grammatical skills that were introduced in Spanish I A, allowing students to become more proficient in their knowledge of the Spanish language.

• The course allows students to further develop their comprehension and understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.
