LS™ Learning Letter Sounds: About the Author

Dr. Donald D. Durrell

author of
Learning Letter Sounds™

Professor Emeritus, and former dean of the
School of Education, Boston University

Recipient of the
International Reading Associations'
Citation of Merit

Dr. Donald D. Durrell, author of the Learning Letter Sounds program, has had a long and illustrious career in the field of reading education. In 2000, Boston University honored him by devoting an entire publication of the Journal Of Education to his life and works (Volume 182 Number 1, 2000).

As dean of the School of Education at Boston University, clinical researcher and author of dozens of tests and instructional programs, he set a course that recent researchers have followed. He and his colleague, Dr. Helen Murphy directed more than three hundred research studies in reading readiness and beginning reading (abstracted in the above mentioned Journal of Education). The instructional techniques that Durrell and Murphy developed, working with children over fifty years, are employed in the Learning Letter Sounds instructional program.
